Helping Others

Advent has begun!

Are you already stressed with all of the preparation and organising?

The Christmas shopping, the parties, the school Nativities?

Perhaps there are some family politics to navigate too?

This time of year is supposed to be a time of “good will to all men” (and women, obviously)

But often we’re so caught up in the stress of it all, we don’t really feel that good will.

This week’s Mental Sunshine is about how we can all bring some of that Christmas spirit back into our lives.

At this time of year, if you look for them, there are always opportunities to help others.

You could donate money or time to a foodbank.

Help to cook a meal for those in need.

Add a toy to a local appeal for disadvantaged children.

To me, this is the real meaning of Christmas – all of us coming together to help each other.

Your local homeless shelter or women’s shelter will be in dire need of help and support at this time of year.

Your local food bank would really appreciate some extra food or treats.

This is not just about feeling good about ourselves, being able to say “oh yes, I gave to a charity,  aren’t I great” – though that can bring some mental sunshine into your life too!

Rather, it’s about reminding ourselves that we are all part of the same world – the same community.

Helping out at a homeless shelter at Christmas might sound very apealing – but actually, it can be good to feel that you have done something to help.

When you give to a local food bank, think about the family whose Christmas will be made so much easier by this parcel.

I like to donate a box of chocolates or something alongside something practical.

There are lots of opportunities to help others if you look for them.

Let’s all remind ourselves that we’re all part of the same community and that we can help each other have a Merry Christmas!
