Control

Welcome to July!

The year seems to be zooming past doesn’t it.

Elections, conflicts, family disagreements.

It’s easy to get caught up in all the differences of opinion and to find yourself feeling pretty fed up

Perhaps even getting anxious, angry or depressed.

And that is definitely not what we want here!

So here is this week’s Mental Sunshine tip: focus on the things you can control.

Focusing on the things we can control helps us to feel more content in our lives.

Victor Frankl said:
Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.

There will always be circumstances beyond our control.

In fact, a lot of the circumstances in our lives are beyond our control.

You can curse and complain about the rain

Or you can shrug, dig out your umbrella, and decide to have a good day anyway.

After all, it’ll be good for the garden and ducks love it!

You can allow yourself to become angry and disgruntled about the person who barges into the coffee shop queue ahead of you –

Or you can choose to think, wow, this person really needs their caffeine today and think of yourself as having done a good deed by allowing them to cut in ahead of you.

You can be stressed about being stuck in traffic –

Or just accept there’s nothing you can do about it, and instead turn the radio up loud and  take the extra time to have a mini dance party in your car.

When you find yourself beginning to feel angry or frustrated, try to take a moment and remember the words of Victor Frankl.

“Choose your own way”

You can choose your attitude

So why not make it a positive one?
