Connections

When was the last time you talked to a stranger?

I know, your parents probably told you never to speak to strangers…

But actually now we’re all grown up, talking to strangers is often a really good idea.

Human beings are social creatures.

We’re literally wired to connect with the world around us.

When we’re walking down the street and someone looks right through us as if we’re not there, this can actually have a negative effect on how we’re feeling

Even if we don’t consciously notice it.

On the other hand, if we’re walking down the street and someone makes eye contact and smiles at us

And that can have a positive effect on how we feel.

Wishing someone a good morning as you pass them can have a positive effect on both of you.

I see that the Marks & Spencer food halls have started opening checkouts designed for customers to stop and have a chat with the staff member

What a brilliant idea.

Self-checkout machines are nice when you’re in a hurry, but some people might enjoy that bit of social interaction as they pay for their shopping.

And having that connection with customers as they pass through the checkout is probably beneficial for the staff member too.

When we stop and make eye contact with a person on the street, we’re showing them “hey, you exist and I see you”

It makes both of you feel good.

Exchanging a smile with a stranger can brighten both of your days.

You might feel a bit self-conscious the first time you do it –

But you’ll soon find this is a completely free way to brighten not only your own day but everyone else’s too!

Who are you going to start a new conversation with today?
