Serendipity

For this week’s Mental Sunshine, I want to talk about serendipity.

A couple of weeks ago, I sent out one of these emails about self-compassion, where I encouraged you to be kinder to yourself.

I received several replies to that email from people letting me know the email had turned up at just the right time – it was something they really needed to read.

Sometimes that happens, doesn’t it?

Something or someone turns up at exactly the right time.

A friend calls to say hi, just when you’re feeling a bit fed up and lonely

You’re walking home thinking, “I’d really love some cake” and arrive at home to find that your partner has bought cake

A key part of serendipity is that it’s accidental.

We stumble upon something without expecting it.

So I’m not sending this email out today to tell you to go and hunt it down!

BUT

Noticing serendipity can do wonders for our Mental Sunshine!

Recognising that something serendipitous has just happened can be a way to “refresh” our minds.

Helping us to focus on more positive things.

Being open to, and looking out for serendipity can help us to increase our capacity for joy and resilience

Which sounds an awful lot like Mental Sunshine to me!

So my suggestion for this week is to look out for moments of serendipity!

Let me know how you get on.

I’d love to hear what you’ve spotted!
