For this week’s Mental Sunshine I want to highlight something I heard from Fearne Cotton a couple of weeks ago at an event.
She said that we should all “do things that make you feel well”
Her core philosophy centres around doing small, daily things that help her to feel balanced, grounded and at peace
So rather than go on a big, fancy retreat for 2 weeks of the year
She does something small every day to help her feel well.
We can all get caught up in thinking we should or shouldn’t do something
Perhaps we think we shouldn’t eat sugary foods because we know they’re bad for us
But if we have a single jam doughnut and really allow ourselves to enjoy it without guilt
That can actually contribute to our wellness
The same with alcohol
We can get caught up with thinking we really shouldn’t
And I’m definitely not suggesting anyone should go out and get drunk
But a glass of wine with friends seems perfectly fine to me.
There are lots of things that are “bad” for us.
But if we steer clear of all of them, all the time, it can make us feel like we’re missing out on life.
Sometimes these things are about balance
Cake for every meal is probably going to make you feel rubbish
But a slice of birthday cake at a beloved friend’s birthday party feels like joining friends in celebration.
And if it’s the first time you’ve eaten cake in a while, you’ll probably enjoy it that much more.
If we’re not careful, we can get so caught up in what we should or shouldn’t be doing that we forget to have fun and enjoy life.
So let your hair down a bit and take a leaf out of Fearne’s book
What small thing can you do today to make yourself feel well?
