I’ve really been enjoying the sunshine and warm weather – and trying not to do that typical British thing of complaining, It’s too hot!
This week’s Mental Sunshine is about exactly this – complaining!
Moaning about the weather often seems to be the national pastime, doesn’t it!
It’s too hot, or it’s too cold, or it’s blummin raining again!
We love a good moan, don’t we…
But it’s not necessarily great for our Mental Sunshine to complain so much.
Too much complaining can actually make your mood worse and even lead to a negative outlook on life.
You see, when you say these negative things, someone is always listening –
YOU!!!
Even if you mutter under your breath so that nobody around you can hear you –
You can still hear you…
And the more negative things we notice, complain about and focus on – the more we’ll find to moan about.
It’s one thing to notice the temperature going up and think, wow, this really is quite uncomfortable…
It’s quite another to spend the entire day complaining about it.
And making sure everyone knows how miserable you are.
Instead of complaining, why not try to think of a positive to the situation, whatever it is!
Yes, it’s really warm – but it’s lovely to stop and sit in the sun for 5 mins
This week, every time you catch yourself complaining, challenge yourself to follow it up with something positive.
When you catch yourself about to complain, find something positive to say instead!
I’m tired – but I’m going to really enjoy going to bed early tonight!
I’m busy with work, but I’d rather that than have nothing to do!
Over time, getting into the habit of doing this can really help to improve your mood.
Making an effort to find the positive in any situation
Always trying to be upbeat
It doesn’t mean being fake or inauthentic – if you’re feeling rubbish, you’re feeling rubbish.
But can you find something positive, however small, in your situation?
