For this week’s Mental Sunshine, I want to suggest something that will probably sound absolutely bonkers.
I love the tips that sound ridiculous, because often even just the thought of them makes me smile!
This week’s tip is to try walking backwards.
I don’t mean you should attempt to do your morning commute backwards; that would be asking for trouble (can you imagine)!
I also don’t mean you should put yourself at any sort of risk if you’re not overly steady on your feet…
But could you start by walking backwards along your hallway, perhaps holding onto the wall for balance?
Here’s why…
Walking backwards forces mindfulness – because it’s unfamiliar, we can’t just do it mindlessly (like we can when we walk forwards)
We have to pay attention, which means the brain has no space for overthinking.
Walking backwards can also calm our nervous system – it can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting the body out of “fight or flight”
This can be a great way to wind down at the end of the day
It also feels more novel and playful – two things that are always a good way to improve our mood.
Stepping out of our comfort zone breaks the monotony of everyday life and makes things seem more fun – even if only for a few minutes.
As a double whammy, you could pair this with my previous tip about grounding
Take your shoes and socks off, and walk backwards, barefoot on the grass either in your garden or at a local park
Just make sure you do a quick scan of the area first, to be sure there are no sharp stones or things you wouldn’t want to step in!
Go on, I dare you – try it today!
There’s a massive sense of freedom in being “that weird person” who’s walking barefoot and backwards on the grass – you can’t help but smile, and neither can anyone who sees you!
You might also find that it prompts a conversation with a passerby – and impromptu chats with strangers are another great way to boost your mood
Just remember to be safe and careful, and to start off with a wall to lean on if you’re feeling unsteady!
